With another new school year upon us, it’s time to get creative in our thinking (as parents) about how to engage our children in STEM education, and also how to provide them with academic support while at home.
While searching for ways to provide my boys with fun academic support this year, I was introduced to Mage Math.
Mage Math is a fantasy adventure game where kids ages 6-13 fight monsters and use magic, but most of all, they practice math. This is exactly what I was looking for!
I wanted a creative way to help academically support my boys in their math skills and to also help with boosting their confidence.
This game delivers on this because the math practice is embedded into a full story, fantasy adventure with hours of leveling up and finding out who is creating chaos in the Math Realms. How much more creative can it get?
What to Expect Playing Mage Math
During part one of the game, players spend their time exploring levels, finding powerful number stones, fighting monsters, fulfilling quests, finding gold, leveling up, etc.
During the second part, players gain their magic by practicing math and using math videos inside of the game to help. Yes! There are math videos for grades 1-6 loaded inside of the game so that children feel more confident in their math skills by answering questions as they learn.
What I find awesome about this as a parent is that my boys are not being put on the spot and embarrassed over a math problem while learning. Instead they can take their time and play at their level of comfort, all while gaining a boost in confidence.
I think any parent would find joy and appreciation in this. Wouldn’t you agree?

Aside from providing academic support to my two boys, I appreciate that this game spans across ages and grade levels. While the videos target grades 1-6, the game spans from ages 6-13 which fits both of my boys.
